Family/Adult: Adult

Genre: Action, Drama

Merantau is a movie with decent plot filled with martial arts (silat) in between. The cinematography is beautiful. The plot interwoven with the Minangkabau tradition is the masterstroke. The fight sequences are light and not that good in comparison with The Raid: Redemption. The music too compensates with both the emotional and action sequences. Actor Iko Uwawis (Yuda) acted and delivered the fight sequences perfectly. Sisca Jessica (Astri), Yayan Ruhian (Eric), Alex Abbad (Johni) and the little boy Yusuf Aulia (Adit) acted brilliantly. Though the runtime of the movie is a bit long (2 hours 14 minutes) but the slow-paced Merantau manages to keep our eyes glued to the screen.

However, the chemistry between Mads Koudal (Ratger) and Laurent Buson (Luc) is a bit off and sometimes bland.

My final verdict: Decent movie with simple plot and subplots. A one-time watch is sufficient.

My overall score: 7.2⭐/10 Available on: Amazon Prime Video, NETFLIX
